Remembering Leslie J. Sclar
Leslie J. Sclar, 76, of Cupertino, California, passed away on July 25, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Leslie, better known as Les, was born on August 20, 1947 in San Francisco, California, the son of Roy Sclar and Estelle Taylor.
Having spent his entire childhood in California, Les decided to become a member of the military and explore more of the world. He joined the Air Force in June of 1966 and met Suzanne (Sue) while stationed in Massachusetts. Les married Sue Ironside on November 23, 1968, in Fairview, Massachusetts and they spent their first year of marriage living in Germany together. They were married for 55 years and filled those years with happiness, laughter, and so much love.
After his service in the military (where he was honorably discharged in December of 1969), Les went into sales, where he sold everything from business suits to toys. A charismatic, enthusiastic, and friendly man, Les quickly turned clients into friends.
An avid sports fan, Les always rooted for the San Francisco Giants and 49ers. While he loved watching professional sports, Les’ favorite sporting events were those his grandchildren played in, especially baseball and softball.
When he wasn’t watching sports, Les also enjoyed making an impact in the lives of those around him, first through coaching and then through umpiring. Volunteering thousands of hours, Les took great pride in being a mentor and teaching athletes how to be fair and hardworking, show good sportsmanship, and grow into good people.
In addition to sports and spending time with his family, Les also found pleasure around his home. He spent hours swimming laps in the pool and playing water games with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed gardening and used his green thumb to grow everything from strawberries and avocados to beautiful roses. Les was a man who loved people, especially his beloved wife, Sue; his children, Melanie (Jeff) Lamy, and JJ (Kindra) Sclar; his grandchildren, Megan, Lucas, Noah, and Kaleb; his sisters, Marilyn Roberts, and Sydne Robinson; and his brother-in-law, Ken Ironside. Les treasured his time with his wife, and nothing brought him more joy than spending time with his family. Les will be incredibly missed by all who loved him, but his legacy of kindness, positivity, caring for others, and holding his loved ones close will live on.
Les loved sports, competition, and sportsmanship. In remembrance of his life, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to the Olympic Club Foundation.
